Not knowing where or how to start I studied many pictures of valentines from that era in such books as, "Sailors` Valentines" by John Fondas and "Sailors` Valentines" Their Journey Through Time. As I reviewed the pictures in these books I became fascinated in the ways they were constructed using a system of dividers as well as noting the types of shells used in that era. To say the least it was quite the journey to its completion but well worth the end result. I dropped of my entry for the show and hoped I had met all the criteria. Upon my arrival the next morning I found a blue ribbon attached.
To win first place in this new category in a major art show came as a great surprise. During the show I was approached by the editorial director of crafts for the Martha Stewart Show and asked if I would be willing to ship my Valentine to New York for use in there July TV Show on shell art. Well guess what, I did not say no! On July 23 rd of 2007 it appeared on the show along with my "Pocket Watch Pendants' and my Shell Art miniature called "Bridge Street". Much to my surprise both Martha Stewart and Hannah Milman were each wearing one of my watch pendants. Once the dust had settled, I decided to create a DVD on how I created it from start to finish and now is in the hands of budding artists all over the world. To me this Valentine will always hold a high place in the history of Traditional Sailors` Valentines.

In 2010 I decide to enter this Valentine in the Traditional Category not having entered in 2008 or 2009. Taking first place again was an un-expected surprise, especially when I am not a manufacturer of great numbers of Sailor Valentines and having only created the two shown here. Most of my time is spent creating pocket watch pendants and joyful hours in creating Shell Art miniatures. I want to thank you for taking the time to view my creations and hope it will inspire you to create your own in the very near future.
